I never planned to become a leader.
16The school choir
At 16, someone asked me to run the choir at my school. I said yes — I had no idea what I was getting into. That was the day I stopped just making music and started leading people. I just didn't know it yet.
My first task: get thirty teenagers to stand still for a group photo. Afterwards, I went to the bathroom and threw up.
That's how it started.
RestaurantThey picked me
After school, I still hadn't figured out what to do with my life. Music school? Maybe. Not sure. So I took a job at a restaurant.
A few months in — same thing happened. The team needed a leader. They looked around. They picked me.
Now I was leading people who had been working longer than I had been alive. And I needed to figure it out.
1 → 2 → 3restaurants
One restaurant became two. Two became three.
24Leadership consultant
At 24, I became a leadership consultant for the first time. Why me? Because I had done something rare: I had built teams that wanted to stay — in an industry where nobody stays.
I walked in with no formal training. No certification. No playbook. Just years of real-world experience — and a list of mistakes long enough to fill a book.
Turns out — that's exactly what it takes to write one.
Here's what I know for certain:
I never applied for a single leadership position in my life. Every single one came to me.
Not because I was the loudest in the room. Not because I fought for it. But because I learned — the hard way — what it actually takes to make people want to follow you.
The G.Y.S.T. Score
You can’t lead others until you lead yourself. But how well do you really do that? Eight areas, one honest score each. No guessing, just your report card for real life.
